Address Etiquette
I am frequently asked to advise about âcorrectâ envelope-addressing etiquette, such as when to use âMs.â instead of âMiss,â or how to write a married coupleâs names when the wife uses her maiden name. My answer is always the same: conventions of this kind exist to make sure that no one feels offended and that people clearly understand what they are supposed to do in a given situation. In this case, âknowing what to doâ may simply mean making it clear exactly who is invited to your event (you donât want to leave people guessing whether they can bring a guest or their kids). While there are traditional ârulesâ for addressing envelopes, this is the twenty-first century and Emily Post wonât be looking over your shoulder, so I say, follow conventions that you feel comfortable with and that youâre sure wonât offend your guests. This may mean using traditional titles as well as both inner and outer envelopes (spelled out in the following chart). Or it may mean disregarding these conventions entirely, perhaps even using first names only.
