Address Etiquette

I am frequently asked to advise about “correct” envelope-addressing etiquette, such as when to use “Ms.” instead of “Miss,” or how to write a married couple’s names when the wife uses her maiden name. My answer is always the same: conventions of this kind exist to make sure that no one feels offended and that people clearly understand what they are supposed to do in a given situation. In this case, “knowing what to do” may simply mean making it clear exactly who is invited to your event (you don’t want to leave people guessing whether they can bring a guest or their kids). While there are traditional “rules” for addressing envelopes, this is the twenty-first century and Emily Post won’t be looking over your shoulder, so I say, follow conventions that you feel comfortable with and that you’re sure won’t offend your guests. This may mean using traditional titles as well as both inner and outer envelopes (spelled out in the following chart). Or it may mean disregarding these conventions entirely, perhaps even using first names only.
